The United Kingdom is one of the strictest places in the world to grow psilocybin mushrooms and one of the easiest places to learn mycology. Spores are not controlled, gourmet species such as oyster, shiitake and lion's mane are legal to grow at home, and the techniques are identical: sterile technique, agar, grain spawn, bulk substrate, fruiting.

Is it legal to grow magic mushrooms in the UK?
No. Psilocybin mushrooms, fresh or prepared, have been Class A under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 since 2005, and cultivation is charged as production, which carries up to life imprisonment. Growing gourmet and medicinal species such as oyster, shiitake and lion's mane is entirely legal and uses the same methods taught here.
Are mushroom spores legal in the UK?
Psilocybe spores contain no psilocybin and are not controlled in the UK, which is why they are sold openly for microscopy. Germinating them is where the law begins: cultivation is production under the Act.
