What Psilocybin Does to the Brain

The default mode network, the loosening of the self, and why the science keeps arriving at the same strange place the growers already described.

There is a part of your brain that narrates you to yourself, a midline network that hums when the mind is idle, rehearsing the past and drafting the future into one continuous character. Neuroscientists call it the default mode network. Psilocybin turns its volume down.

When it quiets, regions that normally keep to themselves start talking, and the felt result is the loosening people reach for the same words to describe: boundaries thinning, the self spreading past the edges of the body. The clinical name, ego dissolution, does no justice to how people talk about that afternoon for the rest of their lives.

The open question is whether the value is in the dissolution or in what rebuilds afterward. The network always comes back. It just comes back with a looser grip on the story. That is the mechanism the trials are trying to turn into medicine, and it is worth understanding whichever side of legality you stand on.
