How to grow mushrooms: from spore to flush in six stages
Six stages, one living organism. An educational overview of how cultivation actually works, not instructions to act on. Cultivating psilocybin mushrooms is illegal in most places: know your local laws.
01 · Culture
Everything begins with a viable culture: a spore print, a spore syringe, or a slice of living tissue. Spores contain no psilocybin, which is why they sit in a legal grey zone in some places and are firmly illegal in others. Start clean, start known.
Watch for: Unknown or wild cultures. Grow what you can identify.
02 · Agar / Liquid Culture
On a nutrient plate or in a jar of sterile liquid, the mycelium is isolated from contaminants and multiplied. This is where growers clean up a culture and select the fastest, healthiest growth to carry forward.
Watch for: Any colour but white. Isolate away from it, do not through it.
03 · Grain Spawn
Sterilised grain is inoculated and left in the dark to colonize. The mycelium eats the grain and turns the jar solid white. Gentle shaking once it is partly colonized spreads the growth and speeds things up.
Watch for: Colonize fully before the next step. Rushing spreads contamination.
04 · Bulk Substrate
Fully colonized spawn is mixed into a pasteurised, water-holding bulk substrate in a clean tub. The mycelium spreads through the bed. When the surface is a knitted white sheet, it is ready to be told to fruit.
Watch for: Keep it closed and warm. This stage is still colonization, not fruiting.
05 · Fruiting
Introduce fresh air, high humidity, a drop in carbon dioxide, and indirect light. The mycelium reads this as reaching the open world and begins to fruit: tiny hyphal knots become pins, pins become mushrooms over a few fast days.
Watch for: Do less. Over-fanning dries the surface and aborts pins.
06 · Harvest & Dry
Harvest just before or as the veil under the cap tears. Then dry thoroughly to a cracker-dry state for storage. A flush spent, the substrate rests and often fruits again. Then the cycle, and the waiting, begin once more.
Watch for: Store only fully dried, correctly identified fruit. When unsure, discard.
