The kit list: what you actually need

Five tickable lists, one per stage. No prices and no affiliate links: what each item does, why it matters, and the improvised alternative.

Clean work

The habits, and the small pile of kit those habits need. None of it is exotic and none of it works on its own: still air, clean hands, short openings, in that order.

7 items

Agar and liquid culture

Where a culture gets cleaned up and multiplied. The fiddliest kit on the list, and the one that pays for itself, because everything downstream inherits whatever you let through here.

7 items

Grain spawn

One jar of grain, sterilised properly and colonised end to end, is the unit that everything after this is measured in. Get this stage right and the bulk stage is mostly carrying things.

5 items

Bulk substrate and the tub

A low nutrition bed that holds water, inside a box that holds humidity. Cheap, bulky, and where most of the volume of a grow comes from.

7 items

Fruiting and harvest

Conditions rather than kit, carried on through the harvest and the drying that follows. The list is short and the discipline is doing less than you want to.
