What Is the Ideal Temperature and Light for Mushroom Fruiting?

Once you have a healthy, colonized block, getting a heavy flush of mushrooms comes down to environmental triggers. Fortunately, mushrooms don't require the intense heat lamps or high-wattage grow lights that plants do.

Setting up the right fruiting conditions is as simple as finding the right shelf in your home.

  1. Temperature Ranges for Fruiting

While mycelium can survive a broad range of conditions, fruiting is triggered by stable ambient temperatures.

  • Ideal Fruiting Range: 68°F to 75°F (19°C to 24°C)
  • Too Cold (Below 60°F): Growth slows down dramatically or stalls completely. The block remains healthy, but pins take weeks to emerge.
  • Too Hot (Above 80°F): High heat encourages bacterial growth and accelerates moisture loss, leading to aborted pins.

Pro-Tip: Standard room temperature in most homes (around 72°F) is naturally ideal for mushroom fruiting. You do not need heating mats. In fact, placing a grow bag directly on a heat mat will dry out the bottom substrate block.

  1. Lighting Requirements: Myth vs. Reality

Myth: Mushrooms grow best in pitch-black closets. Fact: Mushrooms need ambient Light to grow correctly.

Unlike plants, mushrooms do not photosynthesize; they do not derive energy from Light. However, light acts as a directional trigger:

  • Why Light Matters: Light tells the mycelium it has reached the outer surface of the soil or substrate and signals where to push the caps. Without Light, mushrooms grow in tangled, disoriented shapes.
  • What Light to Use: Indirect ambient daylight from a window or standard room lighting for 8 to 12 hours a day is perfect.
  • What to Avoid: Direct sunlight. Direct sun heats the inside of the plastic bag like a greenhouse, cooking the mycelium.

Ideal Placement Checklist

Find a spot in your home that meets these three simple conditions:

  • At least a foot or two off the ground.
  • Away from direct sunlight and heat vents.
  • Keep it at a comfortable room temperature (around 72°F).
