How Much Yield Can You Expect From a Mushroom Grow Bag?
Before investing time and money into a grow bag, you want to know what the return will be: How much fresh mushrooms will this actually produce?
Yield isn't random; a scientific formula called Biological Efficiency determines it.
Understanding Biological Efficiency (BE)
In mycology, yield is calculated based on the dry weight of the substrate block inside the bag.
The industry standard formula is: Biological Efficiency equals the fresh weight of harvested mushrooms divided by the dry weight of the substrate block, multiplied by 100.
A healthy grow bag setup operates at 75 to 125 percent Biological Efficiency across all flushes combined.
- Example: A 5-pound wet substrate block contains about 1.5 to 2 pounds of dry nutrient material; at 100 percent Biological Efficiency, you can expect 1.5 to 2 pounds of fresh, wet mushrooms over the block's lifetime.
Yield Breakdown by Flush
Grow bags produce their total harvest in cycles (flushes) spaced about a week apart:
- Flush 1: ~60 percent of total harvest (Largest cluster)
- Flush 2: ~30 percent of total harvest (Fewer, larger caps)
- Flush 3-5: ~10 percent of total harvest (Final trailing fruit)
What Affects Your Yield?
- Substrate Quality: Grains supplemented with hardwood sawdust or soy hulls provide vastly more energy than plain coco coir.
- Moisture Maintenance: If the block dries out after Flush 1, Flush 2 will shrink drastically.
- Harvest Timing: Picking before spores drop preserves energy for future flushes.
Maximize Your Harvest Potential
High yields start with high-density nutrient formulas and aggressive genetic strains. The Ready-to-Fruit Mushroom Grow Kit uses optimized substrate ratios designed to push Biological Efficiency to its limit. Start growing high-yielding blocks with Telly Monster Myco.
