How Long Does It Take to Grow Mushrooms? (Stage-by-Stage Timeline)

One of the most common questions from new growers is simply: "When will I actually get to harvest my mushrooms?"

The answer depends heavily on the method you choose. The traditional DIY process takes 8 to 14 weeks, while starting with a pre-colonized block cuts that time to 7 to 14 days.

Here is the complete stage-by-stage timeline breakdown.

The Full DIY Mushroom Timeline (8 to 14 Weeks)

Stage 1: Grain Inoculation and Colonization (4 to 6 Weeks)

After sterilizing your grain, you inject spores or liquid culture. Spores must germinate, form dikaryotic mycelium, and spread across the grain. This is the slowest phase of the entire process.

Stage 2: Substrate Mixing and Bulk Colonization (2 to 3 Weeks)

Once the grain is fully white, mix it with a bulk substrate (coco coir, vermiculite, or sawdust) in a tub or bag. The mycelium must re-establish itself and consume the new substrate.

Stage 3: Pinning and Primordia Formation (5 to 7 Days)

Fresh air exchange and ambient light signal to the mycelium that it has reached the surface. Tiny bumps called "pins" appear across the block.

Stage 4: Fruiting and First Harvest (3 to 7 Days)

Pins rapidly expand into full mushroom caps, often doubling in size every 24 hours until the veil underneath breaks.

The Fast Track: 7 to 14 Days to Harvest

If you start with a Ready-to-Fruit Mushroom Grow Kit, Stages 1 and 2 are already completed in a sterile lab setting before the kit arrives. You unbox a block that is already 100 percent colonized, meaning you go straight to Stage 3.
